翻译公司最新消息: South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak promised Friday to push ahead with reforms to overcome a political crisis rattling his new government but also offered to hold consultations on the way ahead.
"There is no time to hesitate," he said in a speech, calling on the nation to pull together against a crisis fuelled in large measure by a dispute over US beef imports that has brought thousands of protesters onto the streets.
"I will overcome the crisis the country now faces... by pushing ahead with incessant change and reform together with people," he vowed.
"I am confident that we will be able to overcome the current difficulties early if the government and people work together with a whole mind," he added, citing the impact of a slowing economy, rising inflation and high prices for oil and raw materials.
"On this occasion, we should pull together to ride out the crisis we are facing now."
The presidency said Lee would begin meetings with religious, political and academic leaders from this weekend to seek their advice.
He will meet first Saturday with leaders of Buddhist communities, followed by talks Sunday with senior Christian ministers.
During next week he will also meet academics and other political figures, although the presidency did not specify whether that would include opposition leaders.
"Through these meetings, President Lee will seek their opinions on how to resolve the ongoing political crisis," spokesman Bae Yong-Su told reporters.
Lee's dilemma is trying to push through a deal on resuming US beef imports to clear the way for Washington to ratify a broader free trade agreement with South Korea.
But the planned resumption of imports which Seoul announced last week has heightened angry protests -- more than 20,000 people rallied in central Seoul late Thursday -- amid public concern over the risk of mad cow disease.
The demonstrations have become increasingly violent, leading last week to hundreds of arrests and scores of injuries when protesters attempted to march on the presidential palace.
Lee's government has been forced to delay resumption and ask Washington not to export beef from cattle more than 30 months old -- seen as more vulnerable to possible infection.
Agriculture Minister Chung Woon-Cheon promised Thursday there would be no resumption of US beef "until people's anxiety over mad cow perils dissipate."
The opposition wants Lee to renegotiate the whole beef deal, but Seoul and Washington say that is impossible.
Lee swept to victory in December's presidential elections promising to use his business experience to revive the sluggish economy.
That has quickly soured however, and analysts say South Korea now faces a leadership crisis just over 100 days since he took office.
Expectations of a quick turnaround are fading fast, he has been criticised for appointing senior officials who have been linked to land speculation, and there is strong opposition to a cross-country canal project he is pushing.
Lee's popularity ratings have tumbled to the low 20s, according to opinion polls.
His conservative Grand National Party suffered heavy losses in Wednesday's local elections, its first electoral test since taking power.
Later, the new parliament opened to a nearly half-empty chamber Thursday after opposition legislators staged a boycott, meaning the assembly could not officially convene.
Earlier this week he promised a cabinet shake-up and other measures to try to ease the situation, but it was unclear how extensive they would be. (阅读次数:
