Some people might find it hard to believe flying cars would appear in our lifetime. These mysterious inventions have arrived and are here to stay. The first ever-approved “hovercraft” has made its debut and is creating quite a splash.

This personal recreational vehicle has the unique ability to take off vertically and land in the same fashion, like a helicopter. Actually, the Volantor has the capability to hover ten feet above any surface, be it land, water, sand, snow, swamp or grasslands. It differs greatly from a helicopter in one key area: the way it is lifted. This hovercraft has ducted fans which provide lift and propulsion instead of the sometimes-dangerous rotor blades of other flying machines. A state-of-the-art aircraft flight control system has electronic rather than mechanical controls and operation is combined with computer technology to maintain the vehicle's stability.

Pilots have agreed that the Volantor is simple and easy to operate as well as being environmentally smart. With noise pollution being an important concern, the company has constructed a multiple duct system in the Volantor with an expectancy to generate low fan noise. Technology is improving every day and the designers are confident that they can reduce the noise levels even further with more research. Also, the engine used in the Volantor, called the ‘Rotapower,’ meets the Ultra Low Emission Vehicle standards without exhaust after treatment. Ethanol is the ideal fuel for the vehicle and provides low levels of NO2 , HC, CO2 , and CO emissions.

Safety is vital when we are talking about recreational vehicles. Enclosed fans to prevent injury to those near the craft, air bags, puncture resistance fuel tanks, and computerized automatic stabilization are just a few notable features of this incredible machine. Since the vehicle is only operable ten feet above ground, there is no danger of interfering with regulated airspace. The vehicle's onboard computer system keeps track of all these details demonstrating the intuitive nature of this machine. In fact the operator maneuvers with only two levers. The left hand control twists to select the altitude moves backwards and forwards to select how fast you ascend and descend. The right controller twists to select the direction of flight and moves side to side to move the craft across the land as it hovers.

Each Volantor uses multiple thrust-generating fans, which are hidden inside enclosed ducts. These provide thrust for takeoff and also power to stay in the air. Each fan dynamically provides stability and control during flight and landing. Sensors are used to electronically determine position and motion in relation to the pilot's requests.

The Volantor is estimated to be available to the general population in 2008. Perhaps in the near future this craft will represent the chosen mode of transportation. Moller International has also produced an even more advanced model called the M400 Skycar. This particular vehicle cruises at the speed of 275 mph (443 km/h) at 20,000 feet (6 km) and reaches 375 mph (603 km/h) at 13,200 feet (4 km). It can travel up to 750 miles (1,200 km) and burns earth friendly ethanol. With an impressive takeoff and landing area of just 35 feet (10 m), this likely is the most advanced flying model in the public's eye.
